May is Mental Health Awareness Month
[Thumb Region, MI] May 1, 2026 — Thumb Community Health Partnership (TCHP) is recognizing May as Mental Health Awareness Month, encouraging residents across the Thumb region to focus on caring for their mental health and supporting others.
Mental Health Awareness Month highlights the importance of emotional well-being, reducing stigma, and making sure people know help is available. Throughout May, TCHP will share simple ways people can take care of their mental health and support those around them.
“Mental health is just as important as physical health,” said Kay Balcer, Executive Director of Thumb Community Health Partnership. “By talking openly and checking in on one another, we can build a stronger and more supportive community.”
What the Public Can Do to Support Mental Health
Thumb Community Health Partnership encourages community members to take simple steps this May and beyond:
• Check in with yourself — Take time to notice how you are feeling and give yourself a break when needed.
• Talk to someone — Reach out to a friend, family member, or trusted person if you are struggling.
• Stay active — Physical activity can help improve mood and reduce stress.
• Get enough sleep — Aim for consistent, quality sleep each night.
• Limit stress — Try relaxation techniques like deep breathing, walking, or spending time outdoors.
• Seek help when needed — If you or someone you know needs support, contact a mental health professional or visit https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help.
• Be kind and supportive — A simple conversation or act of kindness can make a big difference in someone’s day.
Taking small steps each day can lead to better mental health and well-being.
Throughout May, Thumb Community Health Partnership will share tips, resources, and local information through social media and community partners to support mental health across the Thumb.

TCHP invites residents, schools, employers, and community leaders to join in recognizing Mental Health Awareness Month and helping make mental health a priority every day.
